      I love molecular biology, that’s the area of science that I work in, but I also love anything to do with space flight and space exploration!

      My favorite type of science, beyond marine biology, beyond just the study of seaweed (we call it phycology, phyco (‘algae’ in latin) -ology (‘the study’ of in latin)), is chemical ecology. This is the study of how animals and plants interact/talk to each other using chemicals. A famous example of one of these chemicals is nicotine- which is now used by millions of humans in cigarettes.

      Nicotine is found in the tobacco plant as well as others- members of a plant family Solanaceae (potatoes, tomatoes, etc.). In nature plants create nicotine in their leaves to protect themselves from insects that want to eat them. When it was discovered in the 1820s it was considered a poison!

      My favourite science is geology, ok not strictly one of the big three of physics, chemistry and biology, but is super important. Without geology we cannot know how our earth works. It is incredibly important of course for oil, gas (although lets hope for the change to renewables!) and minerals, and is one of the most applicable sectors if you look to it or a career! Also you get to go on fieldwork, nothing better!

      Computer Science is my favorite đŸ˜€ it’s what I work at now! Computer science is special because it wouldn’t be a fundamental science – it builds upon physics, chemistry and biology. So I know a bit about each! I was always interested in computers, right from when I was younger playing a game called ‘lemmings’ on my grandads computer! Computers are everywhere these days and such an important aspect of our lives – I wouldn’t be answering this question right now if it weren’t for computer science! I’m also super excited to see what the future looks like with technology đŸ™‚
