Fish make babies by laying eggs somewhere protected. The eggs are fertilized and then either left or watched over by a parent. The amount of nursing fish give their babies really depends on the species!

Depends on the fish, most are egglaying, and others give birth to live young without eggs. They are much less common however. If you watch the older version of the Blue Planet or the one currently on tv on Sunday evenings, David Attenborough would explain it very well if the topic comes up!
