Ireland is like a seaweed mecca! There are many famous seaweed scientists from here, yet very few of them have gone diving to see what happens under the ocean (most investigations are in rock pools). I wanted to see what happens in Ireland under the sea.

I am Irish, so this doesn’t apply to me! But it all depends on your research area. NUI Galway is very popular for, as Kathryn says, seaweed science and botany. We’re popular for all things marine because of our location so near the Atlantic. Every university tends to have some areas that are very popular with international students.

Well I’m from Kerry and went to UL, but everyone else in my research group is from India, China, France and Turkey. UL is a world leader in biophysics- using physics (experimental physics and computer simulations) to study biological materials like proteins.

Dub man through and through! I went over to the UK for a while to give it a go over there, but after a few months (and Brexit!) I came back realising that my skills were best suited to enhance science back home!

I’m from Cork so this probably doesn’t apply for me either! I did leave Cork for Dublin to study engineering/computer science in college though so it was still a trek! I decided on Trinity because of it’s academic record and international appeal – plus it’s in Dublin, the capital so I figured it would be fun. Dublin’s one of the leading computer science/technology cities in the world!
